Description
Monkey Island & Gatun Lake Wildlife Tour

Panama Canal and Monkey island Visit: Experience Panama’s wildlife up close on a personalized small-group boat tour to explore the wild and rich ecosystems of the Panama Canal, and learn about the important role the rainforest plays in supporting the Canal’s operations.
After pickup from your hotel, your guide will take you to Gamboa where your boat awaits. The ride begins with views of the Chagres River, Panama Canal Railway and the Culebra Cut, the narrowest section of the Panama Canal. The 15–20 minute journey across the lake to Monkey Island offers the chance to see massive ships crossing the Panama Canal from ocean to ocean, along with opportunities to spot different wildlife.
As we explore the islands by boat, which include more than eight in total, travelers will have the chance to see some of the wildlife that inhabits Lake Gatun. This ecosystem is home to howler monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, and tamarin monkeys, as well as a variety of water birds, crocodiles, iguanas, and other reptiles that we frequently observe during our tours. It is one of the most biodiverse areas within the Panama Canal watershed.
You can enjoy this tour in the AM to take advantage of the local wildlife in the early morning hours, or the PM option, which offers the same great opportunities to see wildlife at a more relaxed pace and convenient time of day.
AM Option: Monkey Island Sunrise Experience (6:30 am – 11:00 am)
Start your day surrounded by nature! This tour is perfect for nature lovers who enjoy early starts. The first hours of daylight are some of the most active for wildlife, offering excellent chances to spot toucans, herons, kingfishers, snail kites, and other species before the heat of the day sets in. With fewer boats on the lake, the atmosphere remains calm and is ideal for photography and quiet observation.
PM Option: Monkey Island Afternoon Adventure (1:30 pm – 6:00 pm)
End your day with a relaxing boat ride on Gatun Lake and a section of the Chagres River, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the tropical rainforest. This afternoon tour is ideal for travelers who prefer a slower start to the day or want to enjoy the golden light and cooler temperatures at sunset. As the day winds down, wildlife often becomes active again, offering chances to see sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, and a variety of birds. The light at this hour is also perfect for scenic views and photography, taking advantage of the soft glow of the sunset with beautiful reflections on the water and a peaceful atmosphere to close out your day.
